Abstract

This article presents and discusses changes in science competency in the period from 1995 to 2003 in the Nordic countries based on analyses of data from PISA and TIMSS. One central feature of the PISA and TIMSS surveys is to study changes in students’ competency over time in absolute terms. Some items are kept secure from cycle to cycle, and based on these items it is possible to create trend data, i.e. to place students who have taken tests at different times on the same cognitive scale. This is done by the use of modern psychometrical methods. The results show a decline in Norway and Sweden, while a positive development is found in Finland.
