Nøkkelord: Bible reception, children’s bibles, the cultural bible, the liberal bible

Abstract

This article presents and discusses the interaction between children’s bibles and the modern western democratic society, using the Norwegian Bibelfortellinger for barn and Danish Sigurd fortæller bibelhistorier as casestudies. The author presents a threefold theory on the relationship between children’s bibles and their cultural contexts and illustrates the theory with examples from the two children’s bibles. The research shows that children’s bibles put great emphasis on the relevance of the biblical narratives in the life of children and that the ethical and social values of modern society correspond with the worldview of the children’s bibles. Thereby the children’s bibles are parallel to the cultural and liberal bible, terms coined by Yvonne Sherwood and Jonathan Sheenan. This implies that the children’s bibles have a positive understanding of the surrounding culture and its social and ethical values.
