Abstract

Abstract: This study is a syntactic research work carried out within the discursive tradition of the tabloid written press (also known as yellow journalism). The study aims to identify the syntactic features of tabloid headlines in order to determine if they have a specific structure that distinguishes them from other types of headlines. For that purpose, we collected a corpus of 500 headings belonging to the Mexican tabloid newspaper "Metro" in its regional version from the state of Jalisco, published in 2020. For the analysis of the corpus, we proceeded from a syntactic perspective with the purpose of identifying the most recurrent constructions in the headlines, as well as the most productive grammatical categories in their configurations. we found the preference for the use of simple present and constructions with an elided subject, however, we note a tendency towards the use of non-predicative constructions.
