Alcune osservazioni su Piranesi restauratore e sui Vasi e Candelabri: il recupero dell'Antico tra eredità culturale ed attività imprenditoriale

L’attività della bottega Piranesi, è stata spesso trascurata dai ricercatori, che l’hanno ritenuta un’attività secondaria dell’incisore, volta a mero scopo di lucro. Tuttavia, la produzione dei vari pastiches (candelabri, vasi, etc.) in marmo, permetteva a Piranesi di misurarsi con le opere antiche. I pastiches contenevano generalmente un nucleo antico, frammenti di rilievi decorativi che Piranesi si procurava da protagonisti del mercato antiquario contemporaneo. L’inglese Gavin Hamilton, che faceva degli scavi a Villa Adriana, sarebbe stato uno dei fornitori più importanti. L’attività di Piranesi quale creatore di vasi e candelabri “antichi” non può essere vista isolata dalla sua attività di architetto, teorico e polemista. In ambedue casi egli guardava al quadro generale: l’arredo doveva armonizzarsi con l’architettura, creando un effetto omogeneo totale. I pastiches di Piranesi erano dunque creazioni mirate, atte ad esprimere la stessa reinvenzione globale dell’Antico.
