Abstract

In this article, four picturebooks for children with the topic how babies are made are analyzed. The aim is to investigate how adults present this controversial and sensitive theme to young children through verbal language and image. The analysis aims to answer the following research questions: Which literary strategies are used in the four picturebooks to inform about how babies are made, and what can an analysis of image and verbal language of selected spreads tell about the distribution of information in the two modes? The four books are How to get a child by Per Holm Knudsen (1971), Where Willi went by Nicholas Allan (2004), When Emma became Emma – the story about how a child is made by Peter Gotthardt and Kirsten Raagaard (2009) and How do you make a baby? by Anna Fiske (2019)[1]. The four books were analyzed to find out to which degree a narrative strategy was used, while a social semiotic framework was used to analyze the selected spreads. Three of the four books used a narrative structure to present the topic, but in different ways. The analysis of the spreads shows that verbal language carries more semantic weight than images do when it comes to sexuality. The findings support findings from other research conducted about sexuality.
