I visse af de nordiske lande ændrer museumslandskabet sig markant i disse år. Museologer nævner ofte finanskrisen i Vest- europa som en af hovedårsagerne. I Norden har en centraliseringstankegang blandt politikere siden midten af 1990’erne imidlertid bidraget til, at der er blevet langt færre museer, især i Norge og Danmark. I 1992 var det fx 141 danske museer, i 2013 er der 100 tilbage. I Norge har fusionsbølgen været endnu mere voldsom. I perioden fra 2001 til 2008 blev antallet af norske statsstøttede museer formindsket fra 300 til 85. Fusioner af museer og sammenlægninger af museer med samme eller forskellige fagligheder betragtes af lokale politikere og statens embedsfolk i Norden som løsningen på de mange udfordringer, som museerne af alle typer står overfor: krav om mere forskning, om mere formidling til nye publikumstyper og brug af ny teknologi samt om mere egenindtjening i form af publikumsentré og sponsering – med andre ord: økonomisk og faglig bæredygtighed, som er tidens politiske modeord.
