Abstract

Colour-blindness is today used as a term to point to the tendency to outwardly ignore difference in skin colour even though it plays a decisive role in how one is perceived and treated in society. In this article we attempt to contribute to an anti-racist religious education (RE) by investigating how the didactics of religion can challenge colour-blindness. In the first part of the article, we draw on literature on race, racism and critical race theory. We then connect this literature to RE via the question of representation. To test the idea that we can connect racism to RE via representation, we have conducted a mini case-study of representations of Jesus in two textbooks for the Norwegian RE subject. The article’s contribution is to demonstrate how representation is an entry-point to advance an anti-racist didactic of RE by analysing images in textbooks.
