Abstract

This article critically discusses whether insight into and recognition of “the burdens of judgement”, as laid out by the political philosopher John Rawls, can contribute to dealing with disagreement in schools, and how such disagreement can be operationalized didactically. The article discusses these questions in dialogue with Lars Laird Iversen’s concept of “community of disagreement”. The article argues that insight into how disagreements arise and persist can contribute to ensuring that disagreements on value-related issues are respected over time, and thus strengthen the community of disagreement and the students’ ability to handle disagreement.
