Abstract

This article explores the understanding of religion among 14 year olds and its connection to the choice of type of confirmation. We find a large variation of religious self-understanding as well as a high degree of ambivalence. We argue that the youth to a greater extent understand confirmation as a performative rite, which reflects the identity of the individual and to some extent, the family tradition. The rite is less perceived as a religious marker, connected to the transition from childhood to adulthood. Our material is taken from focus groups and survey-data with teenagers prior to the choice of confirmation. We find that the 14 year olds assume a largely individualist approach to religion and the choice of confirmation. The majority of the 14 year olds speak positively about religious diversity, while they express skepticism towards strong degrees of religious conviction.
