Abstract

This article focuses on the core element “Kunne ta andres perspektiv” (perspective taking) as part of the new core elements of the KRLE and Religion and Ethics (RE) subjects. I reflect on how critical race perspectives and a phenomenological approach can challenge and develop the ideas and perspectives presented in the core element. The article provides a short introduction to phenomenology, particularly emphasizing Sara Ahmed’s queer phenomenology, and argues for why phenomenology is useful for KRLE- and RE-teachers. The phenomenological examination requires insight into Norwegian colonial history, and I provide an overview of some historical trajectories and contemporary implications. Awareness of this colonial historical legacy is implemented in the phenomenological examination of the new core elements in KRLE and RE. The article establishes how the new core elements rests on a centralized, white perspective and how this challenges teachers, students, and the school, and demonstrates how decentralized perspectives can combat discrimination and racism in the KRLE- and RE-subject.
