En rabbi kaller til seg et lite barn. Barnet ser usikkert rundt seg idet hun går inn mellom rabbiens voksne elever, som ser uforstående på henne. Rabbiens alvor er ikke rettet mot barnet, men mot de voksne. Han sier de må vende om og bli som barn. Ellers kommer de ikke inn i Guds rike. Han sier også at den som gjør seg liten som dette barnet, er den største i Guds rike. En annen dag rabbien lærer elevene sine, kommer det unge mødre bærende på småbarna sine. De vil at rabbien skal velsigne barna, men elevene prøver å vise dem bort. Når rabbien ser det, blir han sint! Han sier at de små barna skal få komme til ham, for Guds rike tilhører slike som dem. Han tar de små barna inn til seg, legger hendene på dem og velsigner dem. Men til elevene sier han: «Sannelig, jeg sier dere: Den som ikke tar imot Guds rike slik som et lite barn, skal ikke komme inn i det.» (Etter Matt 18,1–3 og Mark 10,13–16)
