About 280 years ago, churchly confirmation was introduced in Norway. Until 1912, the practice was obligatory, and historically, much of the research on the theme has very often stressed the quite important amount of theoretical knowledge to be assessed and the very constraints this put on the young adult. However, this image of the confirmation as «a high-threshold» practice is not unison. When looking into eighteenth- and nineteenth century church books, it seems clear that local parsons often adapted their confirmation practices according to the confirmands’ own intellectual capacities.
