Abstract:
The experiential «A Gift to the Child»-approach to religious education is a method which is especially designed for the youngest pupils. However, important elements from this method can also be used and applied to pupils in the higher grades. The «experience» presented to the pupils can be a religious item, a symbol, a word, a story or a piece of music. In this case the «experience» is a piece of rock music, with a lyric containing some kind of critique of religion. Such a use of the experiential approach can cause what Robert Jackson calls «edification», that is: make the pupil change her way of thinking, because she has to reevaluate her own worldview or think differently about the worldviews of others.
Keywords: Critique of religion, rock music, experiential approach to religious education, edification, A Gift to the Child, Michael Grimmitt, John Hull, Robert Jackson.
