Abstract

This article reports on a qualitative study of Christmas pageants at a Norwegian primary school. Based on observations and teacher interviews, we investigate how Christmas pageants take place and how the teachers responsible reflect on the role and significance of the events for the school as a whole. The observations show that the pageants involve all the students, and the interviews indicate that the teachers regard the pageants as inclusive and widely appreciated. However, despite full student participation and the teachers' reports that the pageants contribute to greater inclusion both at class and school levels, our data show that it is important to view the events in a more critical light. Our findings, viewed from the perspective of theory on inclusion, focus on two specific areas: 1) assimilation practices, and 2) humorous dissemination of religious content. The article concludes by discussing the significance of our findings in light of the perception of the Christmas pageants as events for fostering inclusion.

Key words: Christmas pageants, whole school events, inclusion, religion in schools
