This article describes how patients with suicidal thoughts are treated within a Cognitive-behaviour therapy model (CBT). A cognitive model for depression is described, with focus on the link between hopelessness and suicidal thoughts. Some of the key CBT methods for building hope are presented. These methods can be used to create a more optimistic viewpoint and to reduce suicidal thinking. The making of an antisuicide plan are described. Many of the items in such a plan are drawn directly from work on hoplessness.References
