This paper focuses on the mason’s marks in Trøndelag and explores how the discourse around them has evolved. I examine how the function of the mason’s marks and their potential role as evidence of relationships between town and countryside in the Trøndelag area have been discussed. Based on a discourse analysis of previous research and source materials, I conclude that, in Trøndelag, there is a relatively simple development in the discourse surrounding the mason’s marks, with a clear consensus that they serve a practical function as control tools or a system of remuneration. The result of this analysis demonstrates that the discourse surrounding the mason’s marks in Trøndelag has reached a frozen state where each addition to the discourse reinforces the already existing understanding of the mason’s marks.
